Sept 25-28

In our school community, we have been learning about Terry Fox, a Canadian Hero.  Our grade one community began this work by first looking at fictional superheroes, what defines a superhero, and what superpowers each student would like to have.  We connected the idea of a superhero by learning about Terry’s life growing up as an average child in Canada and his ability to do great things.  Through stories and videos, students learned about Terry’s life as a child, the discovery and his battle with cancer, and his goal to raise $1 for every Canadian to fund cancer research.  Students in our classroom community then focused on the contributions of Terry Fox and the power that one individual has to make a difference and create change for others. We concluded our work by completing the Terry Fox run with our Andrew Sibbald school community.

Learning Intentions:

-Students examine personal characteristics, feelings, and emotions and explore understanding of self.

-Students demonstrate how movement can support different types of physical activity.

Upcoming this week:

September 18-21

Blog - Week of Sept 18-21

In math this week, we continued to build on our counting skills. This week, we began looking at skip counting by 2s and 5s, and recognizing the patterns that are connected to this skill.  We listened to some math songs as well as read some books.  We also talked about different things that come in sets of 2s and 5s, like our eyes, feet, and fingers.  We then used a 100s chart to notice the different counting patterns and practiced counting with a friend.  These counting skills are something that we build and continue to work on throughout the first term and school year, but is an excellent skill that you can practice a few minutes each day or even in the car.

The following are two links to songs that we listened to and sang along to at the beginning of our lessons.

Sept 11-15

Blog - Week of Sept 11-15

This week in our grade one community we went out into our space of nature and used natural materials found on the land to create images connected to letters of the alphabet.  This will be added to our learning space for us to use as a reference for the rest of the year.  The next day, we went out to our outdoor learning space again, and looked for a tree that we would take on as our Class Pet.  This will be a tree that we will visit throughout the seasons, and watch as it changes.  We were able to come together to make a decision of one tree that will be our tree to watch.  On Wednesday we visited our tree again, and made observations and were word collectors, to describe what we noticed, using our senses.  We then shared and recorded these words together.  We completed our work near the end of the week by having a picture of our tree and adding some words to describe it, as well as colouring the picture to match what it looks like at the end of the summer season.  We look forward to visiting our tree throughout this school year.

Learning Intentions:

I can document signs of seasonal changes over time.

I can talk about how changes in the appearance of environments and plants are related to the seasons.

Leaf Collection and Collectors - Volunteer Opportunity

This is not mandatory, but if possible, we are looking for some families and kids who would be willing to collect a small collection of various leaves from the community.  These leaves will be used for our Season Museum that we are creating in our school, as a space for students to explore and create different things.  We ask that you only collect a small sandwich ziploc bag of leaves and try to find different types of leaves of different shapes and sizes.  If we have a number of people collecting from different parts, we will be able to get quite a good variety of leaves from various locations and places. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email Ms Gardner.  We are also hoping to have these available by Thursday, September 21.  Thank you for your support with this project.

Our Class is a Family

Welcome to our Grade 1 blog where we highlight our learning and celebrate our discoveries.  This week in our grade one community we read the book Our Class is a Family, as we began to build our understanding of community within our classroom, the roles and responsibilities each of us have, and how our actions contribute to a place of kindness and respect.  Together we read and discussed what we noticed about the book and made connections to the dynamics we wish to create in our learning space. Students then traced and coloured their own handprints to represent each individual in our classroom community.  These handprints will frame our classroom pledge, a statement of the things that we value and consider important to help our classroom run smoothly. Look for it in our classroom during conferences!

Success Criteria:

I can describe the ways the community supports relationships with others
